What is Substance Use and Addiction?
Addiction is a chronic condition that impacts a person in many ways; emotionally, physically, relationally, financially, and mentally. It is important to understand that addiction is a disease that can be treated! Addiction is a severe form of Substance Use Disorder and arises as a result of changes in brain chemistry. This means addiction is not because you lack “willpower” or simply continue to “make bad decisions.” It is a complex condition requiring treatment and therapy.
Symptoms of Substance Use and Addiction:
Inability to stop, despite maybe wanting to
Increased tolerance of alcohol or substances, meaning more needs to be consumed to feel the same level of effect
Intense focus or fixation on the substance
A sense of lack of control
Relational conflicts or personal problems
Health issues
Difficulty fulfilling responsibilities at work, at home or with friends and family
