What is Depression?
Depression is a mood disorder characterised by persistent negative and intrusive thoughts, overwhelming feelings of sadness or numbness, and loss of interest in daily activities. Feeling depressed makes even the simplest tasks seem difficult and require an impossible amount of effort. While low mood and periods of sadness are normal, depression is persistent, chronic, and requires therapeutic treatment. Depression is not a personal failure and certainly not something that can be “snapped out of"!”
Symptoms of Depression:
Excessive sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness
Irritability, frustration, or angry outbursts, even at small things
Loss of interest in normal activities
Sleep disturbances (sleeping too much or too little)
Fixation on past failures or self-blame
Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
Self-loathing intrusive thoughts
Unexplained somatic issues such as headaches, back pain, etc.
Suicidal ideation
How we can help with Depression!
All of our therapists work collaboratively with you to design a therapeutic plan that meets your needs and alleviates your distress. We believe in wellness through connection and we strive to create a positive, reparative, and affirming therapeutic relationship with each of our clients. At Peach Door Counselling, we use a holistic, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed perspective.
Depression is treated using a blend of modalities including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) and Somatic Experiencing. Depression therapy aims to validate experiences, relieve symptoms, recognize the cognitive distortions or patterns of thinking that perpetuate depression and establish a sustainable and meaningful structure towards relief. In some cases, a suicide safety plan may also be co-created.
We help you move from darkness and into a sense of hope.
